Bucyrus Erie 3850-B Lot #1 (Peabody Coal - Sinclair Surface Mine) “The Big Hog”:

**Photo Copyright Eric Orlemann. Used with permission and not for public use without permission from Eric C. Orlemann!**
This is one of the former largest shovels in the world. It worked for Peabody Coal Company at their Sinclair Surface Mine outside of Drakesboro, Kentucky. This is the shovel you hear John Prine sing about in the Bluegrass Folk song, “Paradise”. This machine was a fixture in my family as both my grandfather and one of my aunts worked around and on this machine. It was eventually buried on site in the mid-1980’s after the Sinclair Surface Mine had exhausted all it’s recoverable reserves in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Here are some hard numbers for you to take in about this Bucyrus Erie shovel.
Peabody Coal Company ordered this machine for one purpose and one purpose only, the Tennessee Valley Authority. It was built to supply the (at the time) brand new TVA Paradise Fossil Plant and its 3 MASSIVE coal hungry units. TVA and Paradise Fossil Plant still buy Muhlenberg County coal and Peabody coal to this day!
-Boom Length: 215 feet
-Overall Height: 220 feet
-Bucket Capacity: 115 cubic yards
-Crawler Size: 40 ft. long by 7.6 ft. wide
-Crawler Height: 10 feet
-Overall Weight: 22 Million lbs.
-Date Started: 1962
-Date Retired:1988 (roughly)

Liebherr LR1280, Model:

Blood, sweat and tears! That is what it costed me to build this crawler crane model (1:50) in Mammoet colors. I am used to making the mobile crane models, but these crawlers are a world on it’s own, all the reeving work is amazing!
Making details in 1:50 I am glad this is stuff isn’t as fragile in real life.
Fully erect it’s about 1,8m high.
In real life this is a medium crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 280tons and an operational weight of 224,4 tons!
